Week of 4/16 – Meet Changes

There are changes to both meets this week. The JV meet has been moved to Friday at North Stadium due to conflicts with facility use, and Fairview has moved their meet to Thursday because of the impending weather forecast. The Fairview meet will now be held at Broomfield HS and we will not have a bus due to availability. I will be driving our small white bus to the meet and can accommodate 14 athletes.

Entries for both meets will be posted tomorrow at practice, so please check with your athletes for information!

I have attached a meet schedule for the Fairview meet, which will start at 2:00pm. Athletes participating in the meet will be dismissed at 12:45 on Thursday. Athletes participating in Friday’s meet will be dismissed at 1:30 and we will have a bus.

Boulder Quad Meet

Wednesday, March 21st is the Monarch, Fairview, Boulder, Centaurus Quad Meet at Centaurus HS. The meet starts at 2pm and athletes will be dismissed at 12:45pm. The bus will leave at 1pm for Centaurus. This meet is a State Qualifier.

I am not sure if Centaurus will be charging admission again, but come prepared!

Hope to see all of you there!

2016 Colorado State Meet

Best of luck to our MoHi athletes competing at the State Meet over the next three days. The Meet Schedule has been added to the Schedule page on this website…along with the Meet Heat Sheets.

Pole Vault: Sean Chen/Max Manson/Cole Rowan
It didn’t take long to get on the board!  Freshman Max Manson placed 2nd clearing a personal best height of 15′ 7″. This was Max’s first time clearing 15′ in a meet. For those of you that might not know, Max’s dad, Pat, still holds the Colorado State Record dating back to 1986! Sophomore Cole Rowan placed 4th clearing the bar at 14′ 7″. Like Max, Cole’s vault was 11″ higher than his previous best. Senior Sean Chen also earned the right to vault in the State Championship. Although he didn’t quite have the day he had envisioned, Sean has had a solid career at Monarch. Congratulations to all of Coach Mike Tully’s vaulters!
Sprint Medley Relay: Chloe Bernard/Danielle Honan/Paige Overcash/Tati Cherry-Santos
This story is still being written. These 4 ladies have been improving all season and today was no exception. They advanced through prelims with another personal best time. Their spot in the finals guarantees they will stand on the podium at the end of finals, Friday @ 11:55.
3200 Meter Run: Holly Bent/Audrey Lookner
Both Holly and Audrey have been mainstays in the MoHi distance program since their freshman year. This is the second year in a row that both have run their way onto the podium in the 3200, Holly 5th, Audrey 9th.  Look for both to have outstanding senior years in 2017!
4×200 Relay: Chloe Bernard/Danielle Honan/Paige Overcash/Tati Cherry-Santos
This might sound like a broken record…this group will hit the track again tomorrow in the finals @ 1:35. All they did today was lower their school record by over a full second. Friday will be a very busy day for this 4 ladies with this final, the Sprint Med final and the 4×100 Prelims!
Pole Vault: Heidi Liles
Sophomore Heidi Liles excels in a number of events, high jump, long jump, triple jump…but it’s the Pole Vault that receives the most attention. Heidi cleared the bar at 10′ 10″ on this day, good enough for 7th place and another spot on the podium for a MoHi athlete.
4×800 Relay: Holly Bent/Liz Hogan/Audrey Lookner/Libby Moore
Two juniors, two sophomores…the future is bright for this group. The meet schedule doesn’t do 5A runners any favors if they run in both the 3200 and the 4×800 with only two hours between the two events. Look for this group to improve upon their 15th place finish in 2017!
4×800 Relay: Will Dixon/Isaac Green/Ben Hogan/Zach Liftoff

IMG_2685 (1)
And last, but most certainly NOT LEAST…let me introduce you to the 2016 State Championship 4 x 800 Relay team! If there were any questions as to how this one might go, Senior Ben Hogan answered them early with his sub 2 minute opening leg. It was the fastest 800 of Ben’s career and set the tone for the team. Zach ran another solid 2nd leg and handed to stick to Will, who also went sub 2 for the first time before handing off to Isaac. Game, set and match…there are only a select few that can hang with Isaac…none to be found on this day. This was a team effort…Congratulations guys!   What BoCo Preps Said

4×100 Relay: Chloe Bernard/Danielle Honan/Paige Overcash/Tati Cherry-Santos
This relay team was seeded 5th going into State, but a dropped baton while leading their heat cost them a shot at the finals.
High Jump: Alison Stouffer
Alison qualified for State for the first time in her final season. Alison placed 15th at State.
Sprint Medley Relay Finals
Entering the meet with the 12th fastest time, the girls breezed through Prelims and placed 6th in the Finals.
800 Meter Run: Isaac Green/Zach Liftoff
Isaac placed 2nd in this event as a Sophomore and had high hopes again this season. Unfortunately he got tripped up and went down on the track. By the time he regained his form, the pack was well ahead of him. Isaac finished in 13th. Zach had a breakthrough in his Junior season and qualified for State in the final meet of the season. Zach finished in 10th place at State. The top five finishers were all Seniors, the future looks bright for both of these Juniors.
4×200 Meter Relay Finals
Seeded 10th coming in, the girls placed 7th in the finals. For Juniors Tatti and Danielle, they can both reflect on a season in which they showed improvement in every meet this season. Chloe leaves MoHi with 5 school record, the 200 Meter Dash and a part of four relay teams. Paige graduates sharing records on those same 4 relay teams. Big shoes to fill…we wish them the best!

Shot Put: Nico Heineken-Magri
Nico came to State as the 15th seed and finished 14th. He improved his throw distance by over 7 feet in his Junior year. Look for a return trip to State for Nico again next year!
1600 Meter Run: Holly Bent
Holly raced to a 7th place finish and a spot on the podium, matching her Sophomore finish. Coming off of an injury between cross country and track, Holly showed improvement in every meet leading up to State.
1600 Meter Run: Isaac Green/Ben Hogan
Isaac came into this race as the defending champion, but he would have to “settle” for 2nd this year. Pair this runner-up finish with his State Championship in the 4 x 800 and you have to call this a successful meet for Isaac. Ben closed out his MoHi career with his first trip to State and he made the most of it. A State Championship in the 4 x 800 relay on Thursday, followed up by a 12th place finish in the 1600 after coming in as the 18th seed. Ben will continue his running career at the University of Gonzaga next year with momentum on his side!

Congratulations to the Pomona Boys (94.5 points) and the Fort Collins Girls (81 points) for winning the 5A State Championships. The MoHi girls placed 16th with 19 points. The MoHi boys placed 7th with 31.5 points.

Coyotes Off to a Great Start on the Season!

By Sam Wexler
The coyotes are off to a roaring start on the season with a school record and a lot of PRs already. The coyotes kicked things off with the Boulder Invite and the Boulder Quad before heading off to spring break. Post break, the rescheduled Longmont Invite and the Mountain Range Invite turned in some great performances. The weather could not have been more variable for the early part of the season. The Boulder Invite and the Mountain Range Invite were hot, sunny days while the Boulder Quad and the Longmont Invite, that was postponed in the first place due to the blizzard, were cloudy and cooler. Nonetheless, the season is off the a great start.

On the girls side, Heidi Liles became the first girl ever at Monarch to eclipse 10 feet in the pole vault. That school record vault of 10’0” currently ranks her 7th in the state. Heidi’s high jump of 4’11” ranks her 16th in the state. Georgia Reis, with her current pole vault of 9’0” is ranked 13th, and Alison Stouffer, with her high 5′ 1.5″ high jump is currently ranked 10th. Kudos to the team of Chloe Bernard, Paige Overcash, Tati Cherry-Santos and Danielle Honan for their two relay wins at Mountain Range last Saturday. They started the meet off with 2nd fastest time in the state in the sprint medley relay and capped it off with the 10th fastest time in the 4×200 relay. Two great wins for a meet this size! The distance duo of Holly Bent and Audrey Lookner are looking towards a great meet in Arcadia, CA this weekend and are currently both ranked in the top 18 in the 1600 and 3200. While Holly is also currently qualified for state in the 800 as well.

On the boys side, the pole vaulting trio of Max Manson, Sean Chen, and Cole Rowan are all ranked in the top 10, with Max at the top of the list. Nico Heineke-Magri is off to a great start in the shot and disc this year, currently ranked in the top 30 in both events and improving every week. Isaac Green, in typical fashion, is running very fast times and winning races. His winning time in the 800 at Mountain Range currently ranks first in the states he heads off to the Arcadia Meet in California. Ben Hogan is running well in every race he is put into, with top 18 times in the 800 and 3200 right now. Charlie Perry, coming off an injury in cross country, looks strong is currently ranked 18th in the 3200. The season is looking bright for the coyotes, lots of time for many more wins and PRs!

If you are new to Colorado high school track and field, at the end of the season, if an athlete is ranked in the top 18, they qualify for the State meet. Select the result tab at the left and then click on the “Top Boys (or Girls) Times”. This page should give you an idea of where our Coyotes rank. I try to update this page after each weekend. Each runner on the team also has their own page in the “Roster” section. Each runner’s individual results are listed on their roster page.
